Hardware

My pressure-sensitive tablet won't work with Open Canvas 1.1. I can't get any brush size variation. What's going on?

Can I use Open Canvas 1.1 to Edit Photos?

Yes and no. Yes, you can use Open Canvas 1.1 to resize your photo (while maintaining or skewing the ratio), you can clip the canvas, or you can add doodles to your photo. However, adjusting things like brightness/contrast, red-eye removal, and blemishes are things that are not well-suited for Open Canvas. Open Canvas 1.1 is a digital art painting program and its tools focus on that area.

Can I use Open Canvas 1.1 for graphic design?

In short: not really. If you're intending to add text or special effects to a graphic (such as a banner, icon, signature, logo, etc.), you'll find that Open Canvas 1.1 is not suited for this kind of work. It really shines when you paint with it.

Is it free? How can that be?

Yes, it really is free! PGN shared Open Canvas 1.1 as freeware back in the early 2000s. The later versions, Open Canvas 2 and higher, are all paid programs. Open Canvas 1.1 and the translation of it are still floating around on the internet.

Can I use a mouse Open Canvas 1.1?

Yes, but it is not as effective as using a pressure-sensitive tablet. The brushes in Open Canvas 1.1 are all pressure-sensitive and have size variation, based on the pressure of your pen. While it's not impossible to create artwork with a mouse, it's not recommended.

Why does the Open Canvas 1.1 toolbar display random characters?

Sometimes Open Canvas 1.1 launches in Japanese. However, the characters do not render correctly, due to the English translation. The resulting mishmash of characters makes the toolbar unreadable. To fix this, simple click on the last option of the toolbar and click "English". This should make the text render correctly. Usually this error only occurs on first launch. Open Canvas 1.1 will remember your setting for next time.

Why are some of the buttons not in English?

The English translation of Open Canvas 1.1 is somewhat incomplete. There are no future plans to complete this project. As a result, some of the buttons/menus remain written in Japanese. For the most part, this does not affect the usability of the program.

How do I open a .ZIP file?

To open a .ZIP file, you'll need either a zip extractor, or you can use the built-in software on your computer. Just right-click on the file and select "Extract Here". Then, the contents of the file will be within  the same folder as the file.

I can't start the installation wizard. What do I do?

With Open Canvas 1.1, there is no installation wizard. All you have to do is download, extract, and run. Double-click on the Open Canvas 1.1 icon after you've extracted it, and the program should run.

How do I set my canvas size to more than 5000 x 5000 pixels?

Unfortunately, 5000 x 5000 pixels is the largest size a canvas can be.

Can I change the DPI?

Unfortunately, you cannot. The default DPI is 72. This is ideal for web display.

Some of my image disappeared when I moved it off canvas. What's going on?

Open Canvas 1.1 does not maintain image information that has moved off canvas. This means that Open Canvas will clip anything that is no longer on the active canvas. Please be careful as you may not be able to retrieve the information without reverting to a previous save.

Why does my selected colour keep changing?

You may be right-clicking by accident. A right-click will select the colour where the mouse is currently hovering. If your tablet pen has buttons on it where you hold it, it may have right-click as one of the settings.

Can I change the brightness/contrast?

No, Open Canvas 1.1 cannot make an adjustments, such as brightness and contrast.

Can I use filters?

No, Open Canvas 1.1 does not have any filter capability.

Help! I lost all of my tools!

You may have pressed "Tab"  by accident. Try pressing it again.

How can I toggle through the layers?

To switch the layers, click on the layer you want to edit in the layer window. The selected layer will highlight in purple.

How do I rearrange layers?

To rearrange layers, click and drag the layer up or down to change its order. You must have at least two layers to do this.

Can I add text to an image?

No, Open Canvas 1.1 does not support text.

Can I select part of an image?

No, Open Canvas 1.1 does not have a selection tool.

Can I use a file I created in a different program?

Yes, you can use a file that was created in a different program, so long as the file type is a .JPG, .BMP, .WPB, or .WPE.

However, if the file is a .JPG or a .BMP, then you will be unable to replay your file (export the Event File). .JPG and .BMP files lose layer information, so will only have the single layer.

After I saved my file, the layers disappeared. What happened?

If you saved your file as a .JPG or .BMP and reopened it later, the layer information will have been lost and the file would have been merged into a single layer.

To prevent layer loss, save your working file as a .WPB and share the file online as a .JPG.

Why don't I have layers any more after saving it?

If you saved your file as a .JPG or .BMP and reopened it later, the layer information will have been lost and the file would have been merged into a single layer.

To prevent layer loss, save your working file as a .WPB and share the file online as a .JPG.

Why does my picture print out so small?

Open Canvas 1.1 cannot support files that are 300 DPI, which is the ideal size for printing. This means that the default, 72 DPI, will print out much smaller. If you want to share your images with your friends, it's best to do so online.

Why does my picture look so pixelated?

If you've saved your file as a .JPEG, it's possible that your preferences have set the .JPEG file compression to low. To fix this, click on "File", "Preferences", and click and drag the slider to "100%". This should make the .JPEGs less lossy.

What are "Event Files"?

An Event File is a special file type unique to Open Canvas. It records your drawing process and allows you to rewatch the creation of the image with every stroke played back to you.

It also allows you to pause the recording at any time to edit your image in a different way.

How do I replay a file?

To replay a file, click on "File" and "Import Event File". Select the .WPE file you want to replay. Click on "OK" for the dialogue box that pops up. Do not change any settings. Then, the file will begin to play automatically.

How do I pause a file?

To pause an Event File, click "Show" and select "stop event playing".

Why can't I upload my Event File to the Community?

PGN's Community page only supports Event Files from Open Canvas 4.5 and higher. To share your process online with people without Open Canvas 1.1, you can use a screen recorder and upload the file to YouTube.

Why do I get a 404 error when I try to upload an image to PGN?

PGN does not support Open Canvas 1.1 any longer. As such, you cannot upload files directly to their Community using the Open Canvas 1.1 interface.

How do I figure out my IP address?

If you are hosting a collaboration session using the networking feature of Open Canvas 1.1, you need to download an external VPN software. We recommend using Evolve.

From there, you and your collaborators must make an account. The host of the collaboration must create a party and invite members to their party.

On the party page, your IP address will be available, which you can share with your friends. That is the IP address that you must use to connect in Open Canvas 1.1.

What is this "chat" button?

The chat button is a feature of the networking function. You can chat and collaborate with friends on a single canvas.

First, we recommend that you use a Wacom Tablet. They are optimized for use with Open Canvas. Next, please ensure that all drivers are up to date.
